Luc can really bring his years of experience in PR to bear in his current marketing role

Luc recently started working as a Marketing Associate at Hilaire Van der Haeghe

After my studies, I went to work in the world of journalism and public relations. My specialisation? Multimedia, IT and automotive. During that career, I resolved to leave the world of PR agencies around age 40. I started looking for an in-house job, where I could do a combination of PR and marketing tasks. That's how I ended up - via a small detour - at my previous employer. A fine workplace where I gained baking experience. Unfortunately, in early 2023, the company went through a restructuring and had to lay off nearly 50 percent of the staff, including me. Since my spouse was already finding work through Bright Plus, I decided to enroll myself there as well. The fact that the office seriously takes into account your needs and expectations as a candidate definitely won me over.

After going through some tests, I immediately received a phone call with an offer. I didn't yet know the company with the open position, but immediately felt a click when I read up on it. From then on, things moved very quickly. A day later I was able to go on an initial introductory interview and not much later I was actually working there.

Experience, creativity and strong communication skills are things you need to be able to present in a job like mine, yet even as a seasoned professional I'm still learning every day.

Why I love doing what I do

This year is a celebration year for my new employer and there are also a lot of trade shows planned. My background in marketing and PR helps me handle the planning and event management for all of this. Furthermore, my varied duties include working out advertisements, promotional campaigns and gadgets, PR, internal and external communications and streamlining digital channels. In short: exactly the kind of versatile job I was looking for.

My skills as a marketing professional

Experience, creativity and strong communication skills are things you need to be able to present in a job like mine, yet even as a seasoned professional I'm still learning every day. For example, my knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop already received a thorough refresher, and social media holds fewer and fewer secrets for me. Social skills and persuasiveness are also essential in a marketing position, as well as a sense of initiative and entrepreneurship.

One tip I would give people who would like to get into marketing: immerse yourself in social media, including professionally. There are still companies that are a bit behind, but social media channels are taking an increasingly important role in this business. If you can master those skills, then marketing is a field in which you can certainly grow and continue to learn for life. And in doing so, to also keep having fun!
